It’s fair to say that much of astrology is misunderstood by the mainstream. It is fair to say that the signs are often reduced to tired stereotypes via newspaper horoscopes or punchy instagram memes for the sake of greater relatability. But what’s so fun about this discipline is that astrology is as deep as you are willing to go. Once you get past the surface descriptions, you see whole worlds open up within each sign, realizing the depth and variety within the expanse of the whole zodiac.
Pisces may be perhaps the most misunderstood. They are often reduced to spaced-out flakes or pedestaled as the “most evolved” sign here to save us all. In this essay, I will explore the traditional significations of the sign to better flesh out an accurate picture of the sign of the twinned fishes, and help us understand which stereotypes can be discarded and which have a seed of truth. This article is relevant for anyone wishing to know more about Pisces, but may be especially pertinent if your ascendant, lot of spirit, sun or moon is in this sign. May these words deepen you understanding of this rich area of the zodiac.

Astrology.com describes Pisces as “selfless, spiritual, and very focused on their inner journey” and “[bringing] together many of the characteristics of the eleven signs that have come before it,” putting quite a lot of weight on the sign that simply signifies a certain sort of ending.1 Much of these inaccurate stereotypes of the last sign of the zodiac comes from its modern association with the planet Neptune. Discovered in 1846, well after the seven traditional planets, Neptune, named for the god of the sea, is what’s called an outer planet. It cannot be seen with the naked eye and takes 164 years to orbit the zodiac. Its remoteness and slowness aligns it more with mundane, historical events and overwhelming changes in our lives. We see Neptune present during the advent of spiritualism, the invention of anesthetics; the creation of utopian societies and shifts in global artistic expressions, like the peak of the Romantic movement at that time. It cannot rule the human scale like the planets we can see with the naked eye (Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Venus, Mercury, the Moon and Sun). I believe my tweet below puts it best.
Instead we turn to Jupiter, the Greater Benefic as the domicile ruler, along with Venus as its exaltation lord. Other basic qualities of Pisces to actually begin considering its contours: it is mutable, a water sign, and symbolized by a pair of fishes. Other qualities of Pisces include being fertile, mute, crooked, imperfect, and weak. Valens provides these qualities for those born under its auspices: “unsteady, unreliable, changing from bad fortune to good, sexy, theivish [sic], shameless, prolific, popular”.2 Let’s unpack these meanings.
