Women Warriors
Bellatrix is a 2nd magnitude pale yellow star in the left shoulder of Orion, divine hunter and fierce warrior.
The foundational meaning of this star is easy enough to approach— it’s in the name. The word “Bellatrix" comes from the Medieval Latin bellare, “to wage war”, plus the feminine suffix -trix, literally translating to female warrior. This name makes sense especially in the context of Bellatrix’s placement within Orion. Because most of us are right-hand dominant, the right shoulder, where Betelgeuse, Bellatrix’s twin, lies, is where the active, sword-wielding arm lies. The left shoulder is what holds the shield, burdened by its weight but quietly necessary to keep the warrior alive.
Bellatrix natives know what it’s like to be on the defensive— or the attack, for that matter. The original Arabic name, tracing back to the 9th century is Al Najīd, meaning "the Conqueror”.1 In Indian astronomy, Bellatrix, along with Betelgeuse, Rigel and Saiph, are hunting dogs, led by Meissa, the hunter.2 As the shoulder of the hunter/warrior Orion, this bellicose aspect makes sense. In my Betelgeuse essay, I discuss Orion more deeply. But it’s worth noting he was born of a cowhide from divine sources and could proudly defeat any wild beast. Of the nature of Mars and Mercury, Bellatrix is a fighter. Expect your strength to be honed through conflict and the cultivation of direct effort, especially is Bellatrix is connected to your Mars in some way.
The Mercury nature also shows up in combination with its penchant for war. Ulugh Beg, Timurid sultan and astronomer, called Bellatrix al murzim al najīd, which means "the Roaring Conqueror" or "the Conquering Lion".3 This battle cry was seen as a herald “as if this star were announcing the immediate rising of the still more brilliant Rigel, or of the whole constellation”. Bellatrix’s voice may reach you before the army, or the insights of Rigel, do. It is the guttural warning sound of the lion or the warrior declaring his intention to fight. Bellatrix native may find much productivity in uttering their intentions or putting them into words before setting out to achieve their goals.
